POBER PIXIE
No, we do not yet have a stealth aircraft in our collection! However, we do have another rare aircraft that has remained out of public view until now.
We are referring to the Pober Pixie, of which only a single example was ever built and registered in Belgium. This unique aircraft was acquired for the BAPA collection through the efforts of one of our members.
Designed in 1974 by Paul Poberezny, founder of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), the Pober Pixie was inspired by the famous Pietenpol Air Camper. Poberezny's objective was to provide amateur aircraft builders with a simple, affordable aircraft that would recreate the pleasure of flying the open-cockpit aeroplanes of the 1930s.
The Pixie was available only as a set of construction plans. Its structure consists of a welded steel-tube fuselage faired with wooden stringers and covered with fabric, while the wings are of wooden construction, also fabric-covered.
The aircraft was commonly powered by engines such as the Continental A-65, the 60 hp Limbach 1700, or a converted Volkswagen engine.
The Belgian built Pixie
The Belgian Pixie was built by Georges Haegeman of Ninove, who registered it as OO-93 on 15 March 1983, making it the first completed Pober Pixie in Europe.
The engine was first run at Gosselies Airport in February 1983. During its early years, the aircraft underwent several minor modifications. The original engine cowling, which initially enclosed the cylinder heads, was later redesigned to leave the cylinders exposed for improved cooling. Likewise, the cockpit evolved from a simple windscreen to a fully enclosed cockpit beneath the wing.
The aircraft appeared at numerous fly-ins and aviation gatherings throughout Belgium before eventually being placed in storage. It has since been acquired for preservation by the Belgian Aviation Preservation Association.
Today, this unique aircraft represents an important chapter in the history of amateur aircraft construction in Belgium and preserves the legacy of one of the Experimental Aircraft Association's most emblematic homebuilt designs.
