Sablier - Type 8 Sport Chanute Project

This is a static restautation. This aircraft, although intended for non professional construction, remains dangerous. In addition, it is not certain at all to find a volunteer to fly.
The Sablier type 8 Sport Chanute of the BAPA was built by Thibaut, a BAPA member, several decades ago. This glider remained unfinished, only two wings were realized. These parts were received by the BAPA in 2013. Thibaut has found his Sablier-Chanute and therefore resumed the construction.
2013 - BAPA receives two wings of a Type 8 Sport Chanute Hourglass. The glider is incomplete
Summer 2015 - the restoration begins whith the clening of wings and construction of mats
The manufacture of the tail includes the empennage. This empennage was made following the plans. The few inaccuracies in the instructions allow certain freedoms of style.
2016 - manufacture of the tail
The fabric covering of the Sablier type 8 Sport Chanute is traditional and is made with a linen fabric.
Summer 2017 - fabric covering of empennage and wings
Despite precise work respecting traditional techniques. The first interfacing failed because of the quality of the fabric. Lesson to remember. Do not cut corners on the quality of materials. For a few tens of euros saved, tens of hours lost..
The fabric covering of Chanute is used to learn a traditional covering. It is therefore normal that this interlining takes time and that some minor alterations are necessary.
The restoration is almost complete. The tensioning of the fabric was put on stand by the winter. Some work of rectification will be necessary. The end of the restoration is expected around September 2018.
A workshop is a place where you will find lots of tools, but also humanity.
